The "Step Zero": What you need to know before the 3:00 AM alarm.
To be on the road before dawn feeling fresh, there is a golden rule: you must arrive in Flores the day before. Trying to fly in on the exact same morning means missing the sunrise window completely.
Since most travelers start their journey in Antigua or Guatemala City, getting to the northern jungle requires a bit of logistical planning. The smartest and most efficient way to reach Flores is by taking a short domestic flight from La Aurora International Airport (GUA).
But first, you have to get to the airport. Traffic in and around the capital can be notoriously unpredictable. To ensure you make your flight safely and without the anxiety of watching the clock, we highly recommend arranging a private transfer from your hotel in Antigua or Guatemala City directly to the departure terminal. It’s the most reliable way to start your expedition on the right foot.
Once that is sorted, you have two great ways to structure your travel day:
Take a morning flight if you want to maximize your time. This leaves your afternoon wide open to wander the colorful streets of Flores Island, relax by Lake Petén Itzá, or even fit in a sunset tour at the nearby Yaxhá ruins.
Opt for an afternoon flight if you prefer a more relaxed pace. Just arrive smoothly, check into your hotel, and enjoy a quiet dinner overlooking the water.
Whichever you choose, the final step remains the same: get an early night's sleep. Tomorrow begins in the dark.
